Ben Bernstein: Sounds

Petting Zoo

(BB)
2006
Ben Bernstein
I got the idea for this song from a newspaper article detailing how Bush was allowing the importation of endangered species for sale as pets in the US to drive commerece, effectively turning our world into a permanent Petting Zoo.
Welcome to the petting zoo
built for me and you
tearing out the forest floor
build an iron shackled door

Come steppin' down two by two
nothin' much you can do
lock the door throw away the key
build this zoo for you and me

Birds will sing
days gone by
when man and beast lived side by side
before the genocide

Welcome to the petting zoo
built for me and you
tearing out the forest floor
build an iron shackled door

Tall green grass
turn to stone
lock the door throw away the key
build this zoo for you and me

Time runs late
close the gate
build a wall ten stories high
much too tall for you to climb

In time doors will rust
with us turn to dust
when the trees are gone and the birds have flown
the sun will shine on a world of stone.
